What is an Earth Auger Torque Arm?

For those that have used an earth auger before, the concept of a torque arm may seem obvious. For those that have not drilled holes using a gas or battery powered earth auger, you will be glad you learned before giving it a shot!

Earth augers are powerful machines, often driven by PTO systems on tractors and heavy machinery. However, handheld options also exist and are much more versatile, affordable and realistic for most hole drilling applications. The downside of a handheld earth auger is that hard and compacted soils and clay make hole drilling difficult and put lots of strain on the operator in the form of rotational torque. Rocks and roots are also obstacles preventing smooth and effortless experience.

A Torque Arm such as the Earthquake® Outrigger™ or Sidekick™ can reduce the felt torque on the operator by up to 75%. Not only does this reduce your chance of injury but also makes the hole drilling process more efficient and comfortable.

How Does it Work?

The Torque Arm is a real-world example of one of the most powerful simple machines: a lever. A lever is a movable bar that pivots on a fulcrum attached to a fixed point. The lever operates by applying forces at different distances from the pivot point. Earthquake Torque Arms allow the force of the spinning powerhead to be applied at the wheel(s) making contact with the ground, rather than at the operator position—thereby reducing the amount of force the operator must apply to the powerhead to stay in a comfortable position.
